Basic Needs at Strathmore is a student support program operating within FELSS Financial Education, Loans, and Support Services at the University of California, Los Angeles. As part of the Support Services branch of FELSS, the program is dedicated to ensuring that students have a stable foundation for pursuing their education. Its mission is to address immediate basic needs — including food, personal hygiene, and academic resources while fostering well-being and promoting equal opportunity across the UCLA community. UCLA is home to over 33,000 undergraduates and more than 13,600 graduate students, with a significant number of commuter, first-generation, and international students. Basic Needs at Strathmore exists to serve students from all these backgrounds, providing essential necessities for students living on- and off-campus alike. The program is anchored by its welcoming physical space at Strathmore 106, which functions as a food pantry, snack and drink station, personal essentials hub, and a quiet place to study or meet. Students can drop in to access non-perishable food items, hygiene products, clothing, and more, all free of charge. The space is intentionally designed to be a hub where any student can relax, recharge, and pick up what they need without barriers or stigma. For students who do not have a meal plan, including many commuter students, the program offers a free fresh meal or freezer item once per day from the center's refrigerator. During midterms and finals weeks, the program provides warm meals for all students — recognizing that these are often the most stressful and nutritionally vulnerable times in the academic calendar. Beyond food and essentials, Basic Needs at Strathmore provides a range of academic support resources. Students can sign in to access bluebooks, scantrons, pens, pencils, and index cards, and can print in both color and black and white, removing small but real barriers to academic participation. The program also supports students navigating UCLA's broader FELSS system, including Economic Crisis Response meal tickets for students experiencing food insecurity and general guidance on loan processes, with connections to loan services counselors when needed. For commuter students specifically, the BruinHub space offers a designated area with a fridge and microwave, napping pods, and a quiet environment for studying or resting between classes, acknowledging the unique challenges commuters face in balancing campus life with off-campus responsibilities. Basic Needs at Strathmore partners with Student LunchBox to host a biweekly Mobile Market, typically held at Tipuana Patio near the Weyburn apartments from 11 AM to 2 PM. Through this collaboration, students can access fresh produce, canned goods, and dry staples, and occasionally receive surprise items such as dairy products, clothing, and hygiene products. Students are encouraged to bring their own bags and participate in building healthy habits as part of a supportive campus community. As fourth-year student Kayla Lopez shared, the Student LunchBox partnership has "allowed me to not worry about my next meal. Instead, I can focus on being a student, like applying for grad school and studying late nights." It is exactly this kind of stability, the freedom to focus, that the program is designed to create.
