The University of Texas in Los Angeles (UTLA) is an academic and professional program based in Burbank, CA that immerses UT Austin students in the entertainment industry. Open to all majors, UTLA selects a group of students each semester to live, work, and learn in Los Angeles. Our mission is to bridge the classroom with real-world experiential learning through industry-focused coursework, internships, extracurricular activities, and meaningful connections with working professionals in LA. UTLA serves a cohort of approximately 150 students each year from The University of Texas at Austin, representing a wide range of majors, backgrounds, and career interests. While many students are interested in film, television, and media, the program touches an array of potential career paths. The mission of UTLA is to prepare students for careers in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles and beyond. UTLA supports student success by helping them build practical skills and professional networks, expanding access to competitive industry experiences, and promoting well-being through a close-knit student and alumni community and dedicated, personalized guidance from UTLA staff and faculty. The program can provide basic-needs coverage for students (including groceries) through donor funding and nonprofit support. Due to the high cost of living in Los Angeles, supplementing grocery needs offsets the cost of the program for students and reduces food insecurity. UTLA offers a free food pantry, mental health resources/counseling, and student emergency services in conjunction with our on-campus partners in Austin. Students are able to access a wide variety of snacks and groceries from the UTLA pantry, including meat, dairy, vegetables, fruit and grains to eat onsite or make meals for themselves at home. Student Lunchbox provides 2 to 3 grocery deliveries each semester at no cost to UTLA, available for students to take freely from the UTLA kitchen. This resource greatly reduces the financial burden for students in need and allows them to focus their energy solely on the program.
