Building a Bridge Between Food waste and College Hunger
Student LunchBox (SLB) is a 501(c)3 approved, tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization committed to fighting food insecurity among college students. Our mission is to ensure that no student goes hungry while pursuing their academic dreams. We do this by realizing our program by rescuing and distributing food and other essentials to all college students who cannot otherwise afford balanced meals.
Recent studies indicate that 1 in 3 college students do not have the financial means to sustain their living, leading to food insecurity that directly impacts their graduation rates. At SLB, we recognize the crucial role that food security plays in the success of college students. We believe that students should not have to choose between buying textbooks and buying food.
Our approach to fighting campus hunger is simple but effective. We build partnerships with local businesses and distributors, community retailers, local food growers, farmer markets, food banks, and community members who donate safe and nutritious foods that would otherwise end up in landfills.
Our partnerships allow us to rescue excess food that would otherwise go to waste and distribute it to those who need it most.
At SLB, we take the environment seriously. As a charitable food distributor, our prime responsibility is to support environmental sustainability, help reduce waste, and support college students who do not have enough to eat. Our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility is a core component of our organizational culture.
We are proud to serve over 45,000 college students in Los Angeles County, and we are continuously working to expand our services to other communities. Our goal is to empower students by providing them with the basic need of food security and we invite you to join us in our mission to fight campus hunger and help students succeed.
