Emerson College, the world's premier center for the study and practice of communication and the arts, was the first East Coast college to establish a residential study and internship program in Los Angeles, pioneering this model in the 1980s. In 2014, a permanent facility opened on Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood, a building recognized as one of the 100 Architectural Gems of LA and a recipient of more than a dozen awards for its stunning design. Emerson College Los Angeles welcomes approximately 200 students each semester, qualified seniors and select juniors who participate in internships at leading film studios, media outlets, marketing agencies, and related enterprises. The program bridges college and professional life, offering an immersive semester of experiential learning, career development, and real-world connections in one of the world's most dynamic media markets. The mission of Emerson Los Angeles is to develop and prepare students to successfully embark on careers in communication and the arts. Through a robust internship program, unique professional development opportunities, and active community service engagement, Emerson LA cultivates an environment where students build meaningful connections and develop the critical skills needed to create and communicate with vision — both during their semester in Los Angeles and long into their professional lives. Supported by a strong alumni network, Emerson Los Angeles collaborates across disciplines, encouraging innovation, diverse perspectives, and creative problem-solving. The program believes that students and alumni, empowered with the right skills and community, have the capacity to enrich the world. Basic needs initiatives are woven into the fabric of student services at Emerson Los Angeles, reflecting the program's commitment to holistic student well-being. Recognizing that the cost of living in Los Angeles presents real challenges for students, the program has built a range of support services to reduce financial barriers and help students focus on learning and growing during their semester in LA. Students at Emerson Los Angeles have access to free therapy, a campus food pantry, complimentary grocery support through Student LunchBox, a sustainability store, a thrift closet, and professional development workshops covering topics such as networking, finding housing in LA, and financial wellness. Staff work closely with students to ensure awareness of these offerings and to help them make full use of available resources throughout the semester. The program also prioritizes practical life skills — including programming that teaches students how to meal prep and manage food budgets — recognizing that college is a time to build habits that will last well beyond graduation. Through its partnership with Student LunchBox, Emerson College Los Angeles offers free grocery distributions directly to students throughout the semester. These distributions are seamlessly integrated into campus life, making it easy for students to pick up nutritious food without added burden or inconvenience. The collaboration strengthens the program's commitment to student well-being and meaningfully alleviates food insecurity for students who are simultaneously navigating internships, coursework, and the high cost of living in Los Angeles. Students have shared that access to free groceries and basic needs support has made a real difference in their ability to stay focused and fully engaged. These resources contribute to a more stable, supported, and enriching experience — allowing students to get the most out of their semester in one of the world's most exciting cities.
